Honorary Professorship of Anton Bruckner Private University awarded to Niels "Storm" Robitzky

03.04.2023 | Autor: Fahr

Anton Bruckner Private University is pleased to announce a new honorary professor: On April 2, 2023, Governor Mag. Thomas Stelzer and Rector Martin Rummel appointed internationally renowned choreographer Niels Robitzky as an honorary professor at Anton Bruckner Private University. As part of the ceremony, the graduates of the Urban Dance Styles course also received their certificates.

ABPU awards honorary professorships to personalities from the arts or sciences who are particularly connected to the university. This connection also applies to Niels Robitzky, who has played a significant role in shaping and influencing the Urban Dance Styles program at Anton Bruckner Private University from the very beginning.

"With the Urban Dance Styles program, Anton Bruckner Private University takes a pioneering role in German-speaking countries in the field of academic education for urban dance. By appointing Niels Robitzky as an honorary professor at ABPU, we as the cultural region of Upper Austria are committed to promoting modern artistic forms of expression," said Governor Mag. Thomas Stelzer, who is also the chairman of the university council at ABPU.

Rector Martin Rummel also justifies the award of the honorary professorship to Niels Robitzky by citing his role model effect on students: "I am very pleased that we can bind an international figure in the urban dance scene to ABPU in the long term through the appointment as an honorary professor. Niels Robitzky is a versatile artist personality and a role model for our students for innovative approaches to artistic creation."

"I am grateful for the collaboration with an institution that works as dedicated and professional as Anton Bruckner Private University. The time I have spent here so far has not only brought me valuable experiences, but also further professional competencies and a genuine enthusiasm for working in the field of urban dance forms. I am very much looking forward to further collaboration and an exciting and solid joint future," said Niels Robitzky in his words of thanks.

As part of the ceremony, the graduates of the Urban Dance Styles course also received their certificates for successfully completing their education at ABPU. The course on urban dance cultures started at ABPU for the first time in the summer semester of 2016 and has already produced over 70 graduates.

Niels "Storm" Robitzky

Storm's dance career began when he and his crew traveled through northern Germany in 1984 to present the then new dances from America called Popping and Breaking. After finishing school, he networked with friends and colleagues through worldwide travel and settled in New York. Here, he became a member of the first hip-hop dance theater company called Ghettoriginal in 1992. Around the same time, he hosted the Hip-Hop focused show Freestlye on VIVA in Germany. In 1996, he founded his own dance company called Storm & Jazzy Project and toured worldwide with various productions such as Funky Town, Men@work, Solo4two, and Geome-tronomics. In 2006, he choreographed the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup in Munich. After that, Storm focused more on dance interpretation and dance education. In 2000, he published a book on the dance history of Breaking in Germany entitled "From Swipe to Storm." Most recently, he was called upon to develop an evaluation system for Breaking Battles. The result was the Trivium, a performance analysis model that will also be used at the 2024 Olympic Games."
