Methods to seed Battles

  • Random

Why are participants seeded into a Battle-Tree?

A Battle-Tree, also known as Battle-Bracket or Tournament Tree, defines who battles against who.
Every Battle results in a winner, who advances to the next round. This is also called Knock-Out or Elimination.
The number of Battles halves each round until only the finalist remains.

Note: In some cases there is also an additional Battle for the third place, also called Small Final, in which the two losers of the semi-final compete against each other.

1.) How can the battles be seeded?

1a.) Top vs Bottom

This is the most common use.
Example: Top32 Ranking

#1 vs #32
#2 vs #31
#3 vs #30
… and so on

pros
- Widely known and used in sports
- The top Ranked participants have a good chance of all being in the semifinals

cons
- The Ranking distance is not equal in every battle
- The chance to win is not equal for every participant

1b.) Seeding by Half / Half Seeding

Another concept is to pair the battles by half.

Formula: Place vs (Total / 2 + Place)
Example Calculation: #1 vs #17 (= 32 / 2 + 1)

Example: Top32 Ranking

#1 vs #17
#2 vs #18
#3 vs #19
...
#14 vs #30
#15 vs #31
#16 vs #32

pros
- Equal Ranking distance in every battle
- The chance to win is equal for every participant

cons
- The top Ranked participants meet stronger opponents earlier.

1c.) Random

Could be done by draw names from a hat or by a push of a button.

pros
- No Ranking needed
- Seeding process can be an entertainment
- Surprising battle pairings

cons
- It is more likely that top ranked participants are eliminated too early
- Participants can win the tournament by luck

2.) Thoughts and ideas

2a.) Idea: Splitting into Groups before battle pairing?

The Idea: Split up for example 100 participants into Groups of 20 to pair them equally.

Note: To seed always from left to right or like a Snake (left to right, right to left, left to right, ...) does not really have much of a difference.

Pair the Battles Top vs Bottom in each Group of 20 would be almost the same like 1.) Top vs Bottom
Pair the Battles Seeding by Half in each Group of 20 would be exactly the same like 2.) Seeding by Half

In the end, this would just complicate a simple solution.
