B-Boy Valo is originally from Ukraine, but has been living in Vienna since 2005. He represents Ukraine’s Life Style Kingz and Austria’s United Minds crews. “When I’m dancing I try to be original, with a big arsenal of moves,” says Valo. “Without musicality, breaking is like a book with a lot of words but no story. So while I do my moves, I always try to feel the music and just dance. Music gives me a lot of power and motivation to create new things.” Valo began dancing in 2005 under influence of some school friends who were already practicing at that time. He was speechless the first time he saw them dancing, and began learning the moves. It took him years, however, to understand the culture and the dance. Valo got his name in Austria. His friends told him to go by his first name, Valentin, but only in short form as Valo. His family didn’t support him at first, because they wanted him to study and be serious, but after years of practicing they accepted B-Boying and are proud now proud to see him compete and win competitions and battles around Europe and the world. Valo is serious about his dance, as well as his studies. He attends Vienna University and studies molecular biology. He only gets income B-Boying from giving lessons, workshops and doing different shows. He hopes to one day also become a DJ. The scene in Austria is small, but thanks to different organizers, local B-Boys can meet dancers from all over the world and make an exchange with the other dancers.
