What is Round Robin and how does it work?

03.10.2018 | Autor: Fahr

  • Round Robin = everybody vs everybody
  • Group Round Robin = everybody vs everybody within a Group
  • More participants => exponentially more Battles
  • More chances to score more Rounds and Votes
  • seed the Groups by an existing Ranking
  • Best solution for Breaking: max 4 participants per Group
  • Flexible due to the number of Groups
  • Group seed like a snake
  • Battles run through all groups in Battle-Blocks

1.) What is Round Robin?

Round Robin is a concept in which every participant dances against everyone.
In a Group Round Robin, the participants are getting devided into different groups in which each participant battles each participant.
In theory these Groups can be of any size, but the more participants in a Group, the more Battles must take place exponentially.

Some examples of participants in one Group:

2 dancer => 1 Battle in total / 1 each
3 dancer => 3 Battles in total / 2 each
4 dancer => 6 Battles in total / 3 each
5 dancer => 10 Battles in total / 4 each
6 dancer => 15 Battles in total / 5 each
16 dancer => 120 Battles in total / 15 each (!!!)
32 dancer => 496 Battles in total / 31 each (!!!)

2.) Round Robin Ranking

The big advantage of a Round Robin Group instead of direct Knock-Out is that each participant has more opponents and therefore more chances to score more Rounds and Votes.

These Rounds and Votes are then used to create a Round Robin Ranking, ordered by
1.) the summary of Rounds
2.) the summary of Votes

This provides a clear picture within every Group.

Note: The Rounds and Votes could be also compared to other Groups, but the meaning is lost as there is no connection between Groups. The Ranking across all Groups therefore looks interesting, but says nothing about the participants. Some Groups are stronger than others, the values are divided differently.

3.) How to set the Groups?

Groups could be randomized, but doing so could could result in the best of the best within a Group eliminate themselves.

The best and fairest way is to seed the Groups by an existing Ranking.

A Group of max 4 participants, resulting in 6 Battles each Group, was the best solution for Breaking.

The number of Groups is depending on the requirements.

Top 8 => 2 Groups of 4 Participants.
Top 12 => 3 Groups of 4 Participants.
Top 16 => 4 Groups of 4 Participants.
Top 32 => 8 Groups of 4 Participants.

4.) How to seed the Participants by a Ranking?

Group seeding like a snake going down, up, down, up.
If you summarize the Ranking positions this results in an even distribution.

Group A: #1, #8, #9, #16 (1+8+9+16 = 34)
Group B: #2, #7, #10, #15 (2+7+10+15 = 34)
Group C: #3, #6, #11, #14 (3+6+11+14 = 34)
Group D: #4, #5, #12, #13 (4+5+12+13 = 34)

These Groups are then further used this way:
Group A: #1, #2, #3, #4
Group B: #1, #2, #3, #4
Group C: #1, #2, #3, #4
Group D: #1, #2, #3, #4

5.) How to run the battles?

The participants are ordered according to their Ranking position.
The numbers below represent position within the Battle Group (not Ranking). Each Group has 4 participants (=> #1, #2, #3, #4)

Battle Block 1: Group A to D
Battle 1 (#2 vs #1) + Battle 2 (#4 vs #3)

Battle Block 2: Group A to D
Battle 3 (#3 vs #1) + Battle 4 (#4 vs #2)

Battle Block 3: Group A to D
Battle 5 (#4 vs #1) + Battle 6 (#3 vs #2)

There could be more or fewer Groups, the rundown pattern remains the same.

6.) How many Rounds per battle?

The number of Rounds has to be equal over all Battles to get comparable results. This means that it does not matter if a Battle ends up in an equal result. No Winner or Loser needs to be found, the Number or Rounds and Votes are collected to produce a Ranking.
2 Rounds per Battle has shown to be a suitable solution.
